Understanding dosing approaches

Different depths.
The whole person.

Language can help start a conversation. It cannot predict an experience or determine what is appropriate for an individual.

micro

Microdosing

Generally describes very small doses intended to produce minimal perceptual change. The intention to remain engaged in ordinary life does not establish that a person will be unimpaired.

Preparation & integration

Notice expectations and distinguish perceived changes from assumptions about cause.

mezzo

Mezzodosing

In Michou’s framework, a middle ground between microdosing and an immersive macrodose. It describes an intended depth of engagement, not a standardized clinical category or a guarantee of retained clarity.

Preparation & integration

Discuss what support and setting would be needed if the experience differs from expectations.

macro

Macrodosing

Describes a more immersive psychedelic experience. Intensity can affect perception, judgment, and the ability to manage ordinary tasks; a stronger experience does not guarantee a more useful result.

Preparation & integration

Give preparation, support, and the return to everyday life their own attention.

The labels do not decide the outcome.

Across these approaches, the useful questions concern readiness, consent, context, expectations, support, and integration. There is no ladder a person needs to climb, and choosing not to use a psychedelic remains an option.

Preparation asks what needs attention before a decision. Integration asks how an experience relates to everyday life and which interpretations or changes deserve further reflection. Both can matter regardless of perceived intensity.

Health information and uncertainty.

NIH’s National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health describes psilocybin experiences as unpredictable and notes that context, expectations, health, and other factors affect them. It also identifies possible adverse effects and says the safety and effectiveness of microdosing are not clear.

Claims about mood, creativity, or healing should not be read as assured outcomes. Do not use these pages to choose a dose, change medication, or postpone medical or mental health care. Questions about individual health and medications require a qualified health professional.
